Every Monday a new unit of Word Generation is introduced. The unit begins in English Language Arts (ELA) class in which the students are introduced to 5 new vocabulary target words (the meaning, syllables, Spanish translation, different forms-prefixes, suffixes, etc). Throughout the week, the students practice using the words in their everyday language and writing in all of the subjects (Science, Social Studies, Math, and Journalism). The students use the words to participate in real-life math probems and science experiments. The students also have the opportunity to read an article written about a different, controversial topic each week. In social studies, the students particpate in debates and then write argumentative claims to support their reasoning of the side they support (this is graded). The students are encouraged to continue to use the words even after a unit is completed. The words are posted in all of the classrooms, as well as, in the hallways. The words are even discussed on the announcements. The students should be reviewing the words on a daily basis from their notebooks and/or word generation rings. After three units are completed, there will be a quiz given in ELA class.
